Fun Ways To Vacation In Your Home

This week we thought it would be fun to partner with our favorite travel planner, Julie Hamilton with Family on The Go Travel, for some fun ideas on how to “vacation” in your home. We hope you enjoy Julie’s suggestions!

As many travel plans have changed since 2020, first it was Covid and now the high cost of gas, families have had more time to reconnect at home. We’ve had the opportunity to slow down, practice new hobbies and recoup time with board game nights and actual sit down family dinners. While we have a new level of appreciation for our homes, we are also really starting to miss those vacations that we had planned throughout the year. If you are longing for that vacation feel, here are a few ways to create fun, new memories and relive old ones while staycationing in your own home.

Order An International Food Box

Explore a different country each month. Boxes include a map, facts and trivia about the country, along with a little taste of what the locals eat in that region. Make it a fun, family night and travel to a different location of your house each time you receive your order. The Universal Yums box is a family favorite.

Virtual Tour

During this time, many museums, aquariums and zoos have released virtual tours or live cams of exhibits. This is a great way to “see” what’s happening at locations all over the world from the comfort of your own home. Visitors can virtually travel to places like the Natural History Museum, San Diego Zoo and Monterey Bay Aquarium. Click here for the virtual links to view these as well as many more!

Recreate Flavors

Food is a huge part of your vacation experience. Recapture those memories by gathering everyone in the kitchen to cook a memorable meal from your trip. Crank up the music that you remember hearing on your vacation and let everyone choose a dish to recreate. Make it an event and be sure to have all of the ingredients and spices on hand.

International Movie Festival

Find a spot around the big screen to watch a marathon of movies from your favorite destination. Put up a screen in your backyard or turn your family room into a theater for the day. Pick a theme, from Italian romance to beach movies, serve a simple appetizer and create a cocktail that matches your movie choice.

Change Your Routine

Instead of eating dinner at the table, grab your picnic blanket and eat in the living room. Set up a night where everyone sleeps outside in the backyard or sleeps under the kitchen table.

In these uncertain times, it is so important to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. A small change of routine and, if possible, a change of scenery can be so helpful to our well-being.
